Brush up on your cornhole knowledge

If you don’t know exactly how cornhole works you might need to brush up on some of the rules.

Regulation size cornhole boards

You should know that a regulation-sized cornhole board comes with the following features:

  • Hardwood plywood playing surface measuring two feet by four feet
  • Playing surface with a minimum thickness of 1/2” with cross-section backing, or 3/4” with or without cross-section backing.
  • Each hole is 6” diameter, centered 9” from the top of the board and centered from each side edge.
  • The front of the board is 3” to 4” from the ground to the top of the playing surface.
  • The back of the board is 12” from the ground to the top of the playing surface.

Rustic Texas cornhole board Texas Cornhole Boards

The first type of Texas cornhole board comes with a a rustic version of the Texas flag. This is a 4 foot by 2 foot ACO (American Cornhole Organization) regulation sized cornhole board. It also comes with a full set of eight color contrasting corn filled bags.

I’m a big fan of corn-filled bags because they are the traditional way to play cornhole and they produce a dust over time that gives the bean bags a good feeling in your hand and also help the bag to slide across the cornhole board (and hopefully through the hole).

They use 5/8″ Baltic Birch tops which is right in-between the 1/2″ and 3/4″ boards that are very common (in case you were wondering). They also come with a laminated vinyl playing surface that holds up in even the most humid places (like Southwest Texas).

Semi-rustic Texas cornhole boards

Texas Cornhole Boards

Here’s another rustic looking Texas cornhole board but this one is from Victory Tailgate. It’s 2 feet by 4 feet and is ACA Certified Tournament Grade. It comes with eight bags and a cornhole bag string pack (which I’m pretty sure is one of those small back pack-type bags that close up with strings).

The surface on these are said to be a bit slick so if you go with natural corn-filled bean bags they might slide around more than you’re used to. You can always go with plastic pellets which might help reduce the slide since they don’t produce the “dust” that corn-filled bags produce.

Texas A&M cornhole board

Texas Cornhole wrap

Texas A&M cornhole boards look pretty good to me but I might be a bit biased. But you can find just about any officially licensed Texas college cornhole board: Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, etc. The boards are two feet by four feet made from furniture quality solid wood. They’ve also gotten good reviews on the leg assembly

They also come with ACA regulation size 6″ x 6″ 16 oz. double stitched bean bags but the come with “all-weather resistant filler.” This means that they likely come with plastic resin pellets, which just aren’t quite the same as the corn-filled bags. You can read more about the difference between resin pellets and corn-filled bags here.

You might also want to look into getting a carrying case because walking around with these big cornhole boards can be a pain without a case. They offer many different types of carrying cases branded with university logos so they are perfect for tailgating and game day parties.

Tailgating Texas cornhole boards

Speaking of tailgating, you might want to go with a tailgate-sized cornhole board. These cornhole boards are the same width of a standard cornhole board (2 feet) and the cornhole is the same size (6 inches) but the length of the playing surface is only 3 feet. These boards are easier to pack up and whip out just about anywhere.

Some people like to play only 24 feet away from the smaller boards since they tend to foul too much. (The standard distance is 27 feet between the cornhole boards, measured from edge to edge. You can read more about playing tailgate style cornhole here

Custom Texas cornhole boards

These boards come in black and white. What’s cool about these boards is that you customize the frame. They sell a 2 feet by 4 feet frame and a 1 foot by 4 feet frame that is 25% lighter than the standard frame. Each set also has folding legs which are secured with galvanized bolts.

You can also choose whether you want corn filled bags or plastic resin pellets, so it’s nice that you have options. Whatever bags you choose will match the color of your cornhole board.

Texas cornhole wraps

Now if you don’t want to buy a full cornhole board then you could just buy cornhole board wrap and then put that on your cornhole boards. These wraps are essentially huge vinyl stickers that you peel off and then stick on to your cornhole board.

These decals can usually be applied over both painted and non painted surfaces. You just need to make sure that the surface is smooth. Most of these cornhole wraps are weather proof to up to a few years so they will be able to maintain their quality for a while.

The hole Shown in the main image will not be on the final product. Cut the hole after application for a perfect fit. This listing includes a set of 2 decals. It does NOT include the cornhole boards. You will receive the design shown in the title and main picture above.

Before you order a Texas cornhole skin, you want to make sure that you know how to apply it.

  • Clean the playing surface from all dust and debris
  • Place the decal on a flat surface face down and peel off the paper backing (without allowing the decal to stick to itself).
  • Avoid letting the decal stick to its self
  • You then want to lightly stick all of the corners of the decal to the playing surface (some people are better off with two)
  • You can use something like a credit card to flatten the decal down and remove the bubbles, beginning from the middle and working your way out out.
  • Cut out the center hole material with a razor or hobby knife
  • Some people use hair dryers to aid in the application

If all of this sounds like way too much work or pressure, you could hit up a local sign shop.

The waving Texas Flag cornhole wrap

You can’t go wrong with the Texas flag cornhole wrap. The coloring looks a little weird overlayed on the background but if you need to step your Texas game up with your cornhole boards then this is a reasonably priced alternative.

If you want to go with something Texan but think the Texas flag is to cliche then you can go for the “I Texas TX” shirt. I mean let’s be honest, it doesn’t really make sense like but we know where they’re coming from and it still looks pretty cool. You can find these for all 50 US states as well.

Texas cornhole boards decals

If you don’t want to go with a full blown cornhole board skin then you can always just go with a Texas decal like these Texas A&M decals. They should be easier to put on than a skin or wrap that would take up the entire playing surface.

You can also find Texas shaped decals like the one below that comes in 20 inches.

As long as you have a smooth playing surface, you should be able to apply any kind of high quality vinyl decal to your cornhole board. Many people like to coat their boards and decals with some sort of polycrylic spray in order to preserve the quality of the decal over time. I recommend going with water-based polyurethane in order to preserve the color of the coat the best (oil-based will come out looking more yellow over time).

Final word on Texas cornhole boards

Obviously, there are a ton of options for cornhole boards and you can go with a full on cornhole board or you can go with some cheaper solutions like the cornhole wraps and even decals.
